The Road to the Dream: Our Journey Through Norway

09/12/2024

There’s a moment, just before every great adventure when your heart starts beating at a different rhythm. It’s that moment when the line between dreams and reality becomes thin, and imagination springs to life. Before leaving for Norway, we looked at each other with a mix of excitement and impatience, knowing we were about to embark on something unique. It wasn’t just a trip; it was a promise to ourselves: to chase the sun, follow our dreams, and come back with unforgettable memories.

Preparing our van—our little world on wheels—was like building a ship ready to set sail. Every detail was carefully planned to make the journey as comfortable as possible while embracing the freedom that van life represents. One of the most memorable parts of our preparations was an epic grocery haul: we spent 400 euros in Italy, loading the van with everything we’d need for nearly two months, from pasta to canned tomatoes. Knowing Norway’s prices would be steep, this helped us save quite a bit! The whole moment was so fun that we turned it into a reel on Instagram—you can watch it here. Finally, the moment arrived: keys in the ignition, a mental map traced in our heads, and the horizon calling us.

Toward the Roof of Europe: Rome to Nordkapp in 7 Days

The first part of the journey felt like a race against time. We had just seven days to reach Nordkapp for an unmissable date with the midnight sun, a natural phenomenon we had always dreamed of witnessing. But time was tight: starting in mid-July, we knew the midnight sun wouldn’t linger much longer in Norway’s far north. Each kilometer brought us closer to something epic, and every border crossed felt like another step toward our goal.

Crossing Europe by Van

Leaving Rome behind, we crossed the Alps with a sense of wonder. The scenery was breathtaking: towering mountains, lush valleys, and postcard-perfect villages. Our van, its engine humming smoothly, felt like a partner in our excitement.

Next came Switzerland, where immaculate roads wound through stunning landscapes. Then Germany and Denmark, where we treated ourselves to a brief but delightful stop in Copenhagen. There, we indulged in one of the best burgers we’ve ever tasted at the famous Gasoline Burger—proof that even a humble burger can be an art form.

One of the journey’s most iconic moments followed: crossing the Øresund Bridge, which connects Denmark to Sweden. This extraordinary feat of engineering, with the sea sparkling beneath us, was awe-inspiring. The cost of toll is around 64–68 euros for a small vehicle like ours.

Once in Sweden, the trip became even smoother thanks to the AutoPASS for Norway, a card that offers discounts on tolls, ferries, and bridges—not just in Norway but throughout Scandinavia. We highly recommend it for anyone planning a road trip in this part of the world.

Further north in Sweden, we got our first real taste of the Arctic wilderness: endless forests, shimmering lakes, and a silence that felt like an embrace. We spent one unforgettable night by a lake where the sun never fully set, a glimpse of the endless light we would find further north.

Reaching Nordkapp

The road to Nordkapp wasn’t without its surprises. One mishap taught us how strict Norway is with its rules: we got a fine. On a long, empty road surrounded by breathtaking scenery, we hadn’t realized we were driving 86 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. That small mistake cost us a hefty 300 euros. It was a sobering moment, but also a valuable lesson: respect the speed limits and stay mindful, no matter how empty the road might seem.

Despite this setback, nothing could dim the magic of reaching Nordkapp, the northernmost point of Europe. The sense of achievement and wonder was indescribable. On that special day, the weather gifted us with clear skies—a rare treat in a place often shrouded in clouds and mist.

We stood on the cliff overlooking the Arctic Ocean, the wind whipping around us and the sea stretching endlessly before us. The midnight sun hung in the sky, a golden orb suspended between heaven and earth, defying the concept of time. It was both the end of a long journey and the beginning of something even greater: the realization of a dream.

We spent hours on that cliff, savoring every second of the vast, timeless landscape. It felt like nature itself was applauding, congratulating us for having the courage and determination to make it there.

Exploring Norway’s Fjords: Wonders on Four Wheels

After the excitement of Nordkapp, we slowed down to fully experience Norway’s incredible beauty. The wild landscapes, the towering mountains, and the endless skies were like nothing we’d ever seen.

The Magic of Van Life in Norway

Traveling by van in Norway is a unique experience. Here, nature is a constant companion: majestic mountains, crystal-clear waters, and ever-changing skies. Norway is also a paradise for wild camping, thanks to the Right to Roam, which allows you to camp almost anywhere as long as you respect the environment.

Every evening, we parked our van in dreamlike spots: beside a fjord, on a cliff, or at the edge of a forest. One evening, we stopped in a tiny fishing village, where a local fisherman told us about the whales that frequent the nearby coast. He also recommended a local fish soup, which we eagerly tried, savoring the taste of the sea as the sun reflected on the water.

Places That Stole Our Hearts

The Lofoten Islands: A Fairytale Nature
The Lofoten Islands are a paradise straight out of a dream. Here, nature doesn't just present itself; it commands attention in all its majestic splendor. Among the places that took our breath away, the trek to Reinebringen stands out. Climbing this mountain demands determination—the trail is steep and challenging, but each step brings you closer to a view that leaves you speechless. From the summit, the Lofoten Islands unfold in all their beauty: sharp peaks plunging into crystal-clear waters, colorful villages seemingly painted on a canvas, and a sky that feels endless.

Another unforgettable hike was to Ryten, a less-traveled but equally spectacular mountain. From its peak, you are treated to a breathtaking view of Kvalvika Beach, one of Lofoten's most iconic spots. Here, nature invites you to pause and breathe: the wind, the sea, and the silence broken only by the sound of waves—it's an experience that reconnects you with life's essentials.

An Unforgettable Night at Kvalvika Beach
Kvalvika Beach is not just a place to admire but to experience. That's why we decided to spend a night there, camping amid the magic of the landscape. The trek to reach it was anything but easy: carrying everything we needed for the night, the path challenged us with muddy trails and steep climbs.

It was during this trek that one of the funniest moments of our trip occurred. On a particularly slippery stretch, Valerio slipped in the mud, ending up completely covered from head to toe! Laughing about that episode made the rest of the hike feel lighter, though arriving at the beach was the real reward.

Kvalvika Beach is postcard-perfect: golden sand, majestic cliffs towering around it, and a sea so pure it seems unreal. Spending the night there, with the sky never fully darkening and the sound of the waves as the only soundtrack, was an unforgettable experience. We even made a video about this adventure, which you can watch here.

Senja: The Norway You Don’t Expect
Not far from the Lofoten Islands, the island of Senja is a lesser-known gem but just as extraordinary. Its mountains seem to touch the sky, and its fjords carve between the rocks to create breathtaking landscapes. One of the most beautiful hikes here is to Segla, an iconic mountain offering stunning panoramas.

On Senja, we wandered along roads that wind along the coast, discovered hidden beaches, and explored small villages that seemed frozen in time. Every corner of this island tells a unique story, and every turn reveals a new wonder.

Trollfjord and the Magic of the Fjords
During our journey, we couldn’t miss Trollfjord, one of Norway’s most spectacular fjords. This place seems straight out of a legend: a narrow fjord nestled between towering rock walls where you feel tiny and awed by the power of nature.

The Beaches of Utakleiv: An Oasis of Peace
Finally, a special mention goes to the beaches of Utakleiv, with their white sand, smooth rocks, and a sea that shifts from turquoise to gray depending on the light. We spent an entire day here, enveloped in the peace and beauty of the place. The wind and the sound of the waves seemed to carry us far from all thoughts, recharging our souls.

Every corner of these lands taught us something: to respect nature, marvel at its power, and be surprised by its infinite shades. The Lofoten Islands and Senja are not just places to visit but experiences to live with an open heart and a spirit ready to embrace the unexpected.

The Return: When Reality Knocks

Midway through our journey, a message shattered the idyll. Someone dear to us had passed away. The emotions were overwhelming: disbelief, pain, and the guilt that often comes with being far from home. For a traveler, this is the greatest fear—being away when someone needs you most.

We quickly made our way to Oslo to catch the first flight back to Italy, leaving our van behind in Norway. After a few tough days dealing with our loss, we returned to retrieve it and began the long drive back to Rome.

The journey home was heavy, every kilometer marked by a mix of grief and reflection. The landscapes we passed through, though still beautiful, couldn’t lift our spirits as they had before.

Looking Ahead

Despite the hardships, our bond with Norway remains unbroken. The time we spent there taught us so much: the power of nature, the importance of living in the moment, and the realization that travel is about more than just places—it’s about emotions and growth.

We’ve promised ourselves that we’ll return, this time to explore southern Norway. The famous fjords, charming cities like Bergen and Stavanger, and winding scenic roads await us. Norway has left a profound mark on our hearts, and we know this is not a goodbye, but a "see you later."

Final thoughts

Every journey teaches us something, and our adventure in Norway was no exception. It taught us to live in the moment, appreciate the beauty around us, and find strength even in difficult times.

For us, The Dreaming Road isn’t just a project—it’s an invitation for anyone who dreams of adventure. Whether your next trip is near or far, remember to dream big, explore boldly, and embrace every mile with an open heart.
